Ok, even if you are a complete Beginner in Russian you probably already know the word ХОРОШО́ [ha-ra-sh'o]. Or even its antonym – ПЛО́ХО [pl'o-ha]. Well, not bad since you are now able to answer the question "How are you in Russian" – КАК ДЕЛА́? [kak di-l'a]. 

But what if you would like to move beyond just describing that everything as “good" or "bad" and try some new words instead?

Alternatives to GOOD in Russian

1) ОТЛИ́ЧНО [at-l'ich-na]  adverb

The word ОТЛИЧНО means excellent, very well. It can be used when speaking to friends, family, or coworkers when you want to emphasise that something is not just fine or good, but very good.

Don't forget that unlike English, we always need to bear in mind the part of the speech the word belongs to. ОТЛИЧНО is an adverb, so use it when answering the question КАК? (How?) or with a verb:

Он отли́чно гото́вит.                               He cooks great.

Мари́ отли́чно говори́т по-русски.       Mary speaks Russian fluently.

У меня́ всё отли́чно.                              I am just great.

 – Как экза́мен?                                      – How's exam?
 – Отли́чно! 5!                                         – Excellent! Got 5!

And with nouns we use adjective ОТЛИЧНЫЙ  in appropriate form (don't forget that it should agree with a noun in gender, number and case):

Сего́дня отли́чная пого́да. Со́лнце!                            The weather is excellent today. Sun!

Пе́тя отли́чный друг, всегда́ мне помога́ет.              Petya is an excellent friend, always helps me.

Отли́чное пла́тье. Оно́ но́вое?                                   An excellent dress! Is it new?

– За́втра у нас вечери́нка!                                           –  We are having a party tomorrow!
 – Отли́чные новости́!                                                 – Great news!

 

2) ПРЕКРА́СНО [prik-r'as-na  adverb

Another good alternative to good in Russian is the word ПРЕКРАСНО, which means wonderful, perfect, marvellous. It can be used equally to ОТЛИЧНО  and ХОРОШО when answering the question КАК ДЕЛА? or just when you want to say that somebody does something very well, exceptionally.

If used as an adjective – ПРЕКРА́СНЫЙ  can be used to characterise a thing, someone's personality, an event, e.g.:

Его  родители – прекра́сные люди.                         His parents are such nice people!

У него́ прекра́сный го́лос.                                       He has such a beautiful voice!

Вы зна́ете, у ба́бушки прекра́сная па́мять.          You know, grandmother has a good (sharp) memory.

Она́ получи́ла прекра́сное образова́ние.              She has been given an excellent education.

 

3) ПОТРЯСА́ЮЩЕ  [pat-ri-sA-yu-shchi  adverb

This adverb (and the adjective ПОТРЯСАЮЩИЙ) denotes an extreme degree of positive impression or effect and can be translated into English as awesome, astonishing, stunning

Потряса́ющее кино́, пра́вда? – An astonishing movie, isn’t it?

Она потряса́ющая де́вушка, я не могу́ забы́ть её! – She’s a tremendous girl, I cannot forget her.

У них всегда́ потряса́ющие иде́и – They always have awesome ideas.

The word ПОТРЯСАЮЩЕ in front of another adjective or adverb  can express an ultimate degree of some characteristics denoted by the adjective or adverb: 

Э́то потряса́юще краси́вый вид! – This is shockingly stunning view! 

В этом ресторане потряса́юще вкусно гото́вят!  – They cook exceptionally delicious in this restaurant.

Отсю́да потряса́ющий вид на мо́ре – There’s a stunning view of the sea from here.

 

4) КЛА́ССНО  [kl'As-na]   adverb

This is a more conversational way to say good in Russian, the equivalent to the American English word "cool". It is used in daily conversations between people with the same social status: pupils, students, colleagues, family members. It also can be used as КЛАСС  in exclamation meaning "cool", "awesome", "great", or something of that sort (Literally КЛАСС  means "class", "form", "grade")

У неё кла́ссные роди́тели, они́ всё поним́ают. –  Her parents are great, they understand everything.

Он такой́ кла́ссный! Интере́сно, у него́ есть де́вушка? – He is so cool. I wonder if he has a girlfriend?

У тебя́ кла́ссная причёска сего́дня. – Your hairstyle looks great today.

 

5) КРУ́ТО  [kr'OO -ta]   adverb

Literally, the word КРУТО means "steeply", КРУТОЙ means "steep", but i figurative meaning this also means "cool", "harsh" "neat", "great"

Sometimes the word "круто" has a slightly different meaning. We sometimes say "круто" meaning  "too much", "very unusual". 

 – Ты слы́шал, Андре́й  бро́сил рабо́ту и тепе́рь живёт на о́строве оди́н. – Have you heard about Andrei who left his job and now lives on the island alone.
 – Ого! Кру́то!                                                                                                   – Wow! Cool!

 – Э́то очень круто́й бар. Здесь лу́чшие кокте́йли в го́роде.  – This is a very cool bar, They serve the best cocktails in the city.  
 

 Это о́чень крута́я маши́на. Но о́чень дорога́я.                           This is a very cool car, but very expensive.
